Quarantine Commodities

Quarantine Commodities Fumigation

Commodities: Quarantine Treatments

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) granted AL-FLEX the required compliance agreement to provide all types of quarantine treatments at Miami International Airport and the Port of Miami.  We treat everything from perishables to wood-packaging to tiles.  The Napoles father and son team invented a unique system, which they patented in June 2002, which enables AL-FLEX to perform all treatments within refrigerated containers. Patent No.: US 6,403,027 B1.

Miami International Airport, Port of Miami, and Port of West Palm

AL-FLEX works at facilities located at Miami International Airport and the Port of Miami.  This is because of our commitment to providing outstanding service and keeping costs low.  At the Port of Miami, AL-FLEX also provides restacking services for perishable cargo at the fumigation site.  This saves our customers time and money.  In the past, the cargo would have to be shipped to another warehouse and it often took days before customers got their cargo back.  However, AL-FLEX is allowed to perform restacking at or adjacent to the fumigation site.  Over the years, we have earned a reputation for surpassing the call of duty to help companies transport their cargo.  We work 7 days a week, 365 days a year at our facilities at Miami International Airport and the Port of Miami.

Perishables and General Commodities

Our patented process, which is described in the USDA’s manual, offers many benefits for our customers. First, it enables us to provide treatments at any temperature our customers want. It differs from the traditional method, which requires tenting the entire container.

Our system protects perishable items from changes in temperature that could affect their shelf lives and burn or dehydrate them.

In addition to preserving the cold chain, this requires the use of 33 percent less methyl bromite, which is known to reduce the shelf life of products.

Our treatment is quick, so it helps products get to market more quickly. In addition, because the treatment is performed within the refrigerated container, customers don’t have to worry about wind blowing open the container and having to send it back to the point of origin, which carries significant costs in terms of time and money.

Export and Import Wood Packaging

AL-FLEX is one of the few companies nationwide to be licensed by National Wood Pallet & Container Association (NWPCA) to provide preventative treatments for wood-packaging materials for the Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) and other Chinese wood-boring insects.

The United States is now implementing a new treaty to eradicate these insects, which invaded the US from China to the US and began wiping out forests.  If left unchecked, the USDA estimates the ALB and other Chinese wood-boring insects could cause as much as $138 billion in damage to the U.S. economy.

In an effort to address this problem and help protect the world’s forests, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) worked with world authorities to develop a plan for preventative treatments.

AL-FLEX works closely with the USDA and has a pilot exchange program whereby we perform treatments at our customers’ sites or at our facilities.  Treatments, which typically last 36 hours, are divided into 24-hour treatment periods plus 12 hours of aeration.  They must be marked with the NWPCA’s approval stamp.

Because we recognize that every customer is different, we adapt to their businesses and help ensure they receive the help they need.
